Rummy
Rummy is a family of matching card games whose basic form is among the most widely played in the world. The standard version, sometimes called Rummy 500 or basic rummy, has each player drawing and discarding to build melds. The goal is to be first to meld your whole hand.
Rummy Rules
Players are dealt a hand — usually seven cards for two players, fewer as the table grows — with the rest forming a stock and one card starting the discard pile. Play moves clockwise.
On your turn you draw one card from the stock or the discard pile, then you may lay down melds: sets of three or more cards of the same rank, or runs of three or more consecutive cards in one suit. You finish your turn by discarding one card.
You can also 'lay off' cards onto melds already on the table. A player goes out by melding and discarding their last card. Remaining players are penalized for cards still in hand, and play continues across rounds to an agreed target score.
Rummy Strategy & Tips
Decide between speed and points
Going out fast limits how many points opponents can meld, but holding for bigger melds scores more. Read the round — when opponents look close to going out, prioritize emptying your hand.
Mine the discard pile carefully
Taking a discard tells everyone what you're building. Only grab it when the card completes or strongly advances a meld, not just to add a loose card.
Keep your discards safe
Avoid throwing cards that obviously complete an opponent's run or set. Discard ranks already seen on the table or near a meld you've passed up.
Don't over-hold high cards
If you're caught with unmelded cards when someone goes out, face cards and tens cost the most. Shed heavy cards unless they're close to melding.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a set and a run in Rummy?
A set is three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. A run is three or more consecutive cards all in the same suit, like 5-6-7 of clubs.
How many cards do you deal in Rummy?
It depends on player count — typically ten cards for two players, seven for three or four. Some variants like Rummy 500 deal seven regardless.
Can you pick up from the discard pile in Rummy?
Yes. On your turn you may draw the top discard instead of the stock, though in some variants you must immediately use it in a meld.
How do you win at Rummy?
Be the first to meld all your cards into valid sets and runs and discard your final card. Over multiple rounds, the player with the most points (or fewest penalty points) wins.
