Euchre
Euchre is a four-player partnership trick-taking game played with a stripped deck of just 24 cards. Hugely popular in the American Midwest and Canada, it's known for the powerful Jacks called the 'bowers.' Each hand is only five tricks, making for quick, sharp play.
Euchre Rules
Use only the 9 through Ace of each suit. Each player gets five cards, and the next card is turned up to propose a trump suit. Going around, players either accept it (the dealer picks up the up-card) or pass; if all pass, a second round lets players name a different trump.
Trump ranks specially: the Jack of the trump suit (the 'right bower') is the highest card, and the other same-color Jack (the 'left bower') is second-highest and counts as trump. Players follow the led suit if able, and the highest trump or highest led card wins each trick.
The team that names trump must take at least three of the five tricks. Taking three or four scores 1 point, all five scores 2. If they fail they're 'euchred' and the other team scores 2. A player may 'go alone' without their partner for 4 points on a sweep. First team to 10 wins.
Euchre Strategy & Tips
Know your bowers
The right and left bowers are the two strongest cards in the deck. Counting them, plus the Ace of trump, tells you whether your hand is strong enough to call trump.
Call trump on three solid cards
A safe rule is to order up trump only with three reasonable trump cards or two trump plus an off-suit Ace. Calling on a weak hand invites a euchre.
Go alone with a near-lock hand
If you hold both bowers and the Ace of trump, going alone risks losing your partner's help but pays 4 points for a march. Take the gamble when a sweep looks likely.
Lead trump to euchre the makers
On defense, leading trump early strips the makers' trump and makes it harder for them to win three tricks. Drawing out bowers can flip a hand your way.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cards are used in Euchre?
Just 24 — the 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of all four suits. The lower cards are removed before play.
What are the bowers in Euchre?
The right bower is the Jack of the trump suit and is the highest card. The left bower is the Jack of the same color, ranks second, and counts as a trump.
What does it mean to be euchred?
If the team that called trump fails to win at least three of the five tricks, they are euchred. The opposing team scores 2 points as a penalty.
What does going alone mean in Euchre?
The trump-calling player can play without their partner, who sits out the hand. Winning all five tricks alone scores 4 points instead of the usual 2.
