Boggle-style Word Finder

This Boggle-style word finder recreates Allan Turoff's 1972 dice game, published by Parker Brothers. Sixteen letter dice fill a 4×4 tray, and players have three minutes to list every word they can trace through adjacent letters. Words shared by multiple players are canceled, so finding the obscure ones wins.

Boggle-style Word Finder Rules

Sixteen lettered dice settle into a 4×4 grid, giving a fresh random face-up letter in each cell. A timer — traditionally three minutes — starts the round.

You form words of three letters or more by joining tiles that are adjacent horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and no single die may be used twice in the same word. The letter sequence must spell a valid dictionary word.

When time is up, scoring depends on length: 3–4 letters earn 1 point, 5 earn 2, 6 earn 3, 7 earn 5, and 8 or more earn 11. In multiplayer, any word found by more than one player is struck from everyone's list.

Boggle-style Word Finder Strategy & Tips

Lock in three-letter words first

Short words are everywhere and guarantee baseline points. Sweep for CAT, TEN, ARE quickly, then spend remaining time hunting longer chains.

Extend roots with plurals and tenses

When you find a word, immediately check for an adjacent S, ED, or ING tile. Turning PLANT into PLANTS or PLANTING doubles or triples its value.

Chase the high-value long words

A single 8-letter find is worth 11 points — more than eleven short words. If you spot a vowel-rich corner, dig for the long score.

Reuse the same starting cluster

From a strong two-letter start like ST or PR, branch in every direction. One good prefix often spawns several words along different paths.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a round of Boggle?

The classic timer runs three minutes. Players write down every valid word they can trace before the sand timer or clock runs out.

What's the minimum word length in Boggle?

Three letters in the standard 4×4 game. The larger 5×5 Big Boggle (Super Big Boggle) raises the minimum to four letters.

How does Boggle scoring work?

By length: 3–4 letters score 1 point, 5 score 2, 6 score 3, 7 score 5, and words of 8 or more score 11 points each.

Can I reuse a letter cube in the same word?

No. Each die can be used only once per word, though letters may connect in any of the eight adjacent directions to form the path.
